GLW1601: By Canal and Coast

Thursday 18th February 2016

It was thanks to the inefficiency of the dental profession, or at least their suppliers, that Margaret was excused torture thereby enabling us to get out together into the sunshine.  External daytime togetherness is a bit of a rarity these days due to Granny's incarceration.

Whilst the BOOTboys were plodding through knee-deep snow, we were strolling in sunshine along the Lancaster Canal from Bolton-le-Sands to Hest Bank, having first passed through Bungalanda.

It was a pleasant and inevitably level activity.  We were noting in particular the variety of houses alongside the canal and wondering if any of them would suit our future lifestyle; if they were nearer Kendal of course.

Our turning point was where you drop down to meet the level crossing.  The gates were down and stayed shut for an awfully long time.  It was only after two trains had gone by and we were half-way through waiting for a third that it dawned on us that the structure above our heads that passed over the railway track was a footbridge and there was no need to wait the other half for the third.  If you see what I mean!  Perhaps we need that new home sooner that I thought.

Now we were on the Lancashire Coastal Way.  There was a café named after us but we didn't stop.  Instead we admired the panorama across Morecambe Bay.

The ground under foot was tricky at times, being mainly pebbles and rocks however there were reminders of what the area used to look like- salt marshes with grassy stretches between sea washed pools.

Nearing our start and end point, Margaret looked into the distance and pointed.

"What's over there?" she asked.

"Duck Hall," I replied.

"Yes there is," she insisted. "What is it?"

"I told you, Wild Duck Hall".

"Oh sorry, I misheard you."

"Would you like coffee and cake in the Bay View café?"

She heard that alright!

Can you see the windmills?

I didn't notice them either until I enlarged the picture.
