: To Remind You When I Expire
Tuesday
15th February 2022
“You
may take me with you to remind you when
I expire.”
What
a strange thing to say. Fortunately
it wasn’t me who said it to
Margaret, nor her to me.
This
was another very short little
walk, starting with coffee and
cake in the car, whilst parked
in Hawkshead's big car park.
Once
refuelled, we set off through
the gates to the old Grammar
School and the Church.
Unfortunately
the National Trust isn’t going
to open the School until Easter
so we have little to say about
it other than to report that
its sundial was keeping good
time, as judged by the Church
Clock.

Once
you reach the far end of the Churchyard
you are effectively out of the village.....
.....
and have a fine view over to Latterbarrow
and beyond to the Wansfell and the Fairfield
Fells. The Helvellyn range could just
be seen with a bit of snow on them.
We
passed through the Grounds of Walker and
Keen, spotting en-route, something that
has escaped us for some time. A washing
line in action!
We
had hoped to get the key to the old Courthouse,
from the National Trust office but as that
is still covidly closed so was the Courthouse.
None-the-less we were able to give
it a good looking at from both sides.
The
return to Hawkshead was a pleasant stroll
alongside Black Beck. Then we explored
this quaint old town with its funny street
names.
Fortunately
it was rather quieter than it is likely
to be in a few months’ time.
Margaret
put on her mask and entered the Honeypot.
Soon she emerged with a Lakeland Pastie.
The
question now was where to eat it. Simples.
We drove to a suitable place with
a view. The other side of the car
park. The journey was worth it. Great
Pastie.
Our
return was down the west side of Esthwaite.
There are few stopping places from
which to view the lake and fewer still that
provide the opportunity for a decent walk
which is a shame as the view to the north
is particularly good.
The
view to our right, as we round the south
end of the lake, was an example of the damage
that Storm Arwen had wrought on the trees
as it whistled south across the water.
Fortunately
today it was calm as we crossed Windermere
on the ferry.
So
who was talking to whom about being taken
to remind someone when they expire? Not
a person talking. It was simply the
message on the supplementary parking ticket.
A thoughtful idea as long as long
you can remember which pocket you have put
it in once you have set off on your Great
Little Walk!
