GLW2210
: A Warton One Hour Wander
Friday
25th March 2022
A
recent BOOTboys
walk had spent some time in Warton and,
on reading the report ( BB2206
), Margaret remarked that one day we should
visit Warton for a one hour wander Today
was the day.
Four-fifteen
was the time when we parked near the remarkably
busy Old School Brewery. We were in
danger of losing the sun so we ignored its
attractions and moved on down to the main
street, emerging near the St Oswald, King
and Martyr Church.
I
spotted, on the wall of the cottage between
the Institute and the Churchyard what at
first seemed to be old plaques of the type
that signified that the building had fire
insurance with whichever company. I
went into the churchyard to peer over the
wall then called Margaret to do likewise.
What a remarkable little garden is
hidden away there. Full of all sort
of oddities as you will se if you expand
the picture.
More-or-less
across the road are the ruins of the Old
Rectory. Vicars certainly did (and
some still do) know how to live in style
in large houses though it is long, long
time since this one was operational.
The
George Washington pub (his ancestor's lived
in Warton) looked very quiet ....
.....but
further down the road, overlooking the children’s
play area, the Malt Shovel was heaving with
parents enjoying a drink in the sunshine
whilst the kids burned off their energies
on the swings and slides.
We
discovered a footpath that ran under a building
to the rear of the main street and followed
that round along the edge of fields then
behind houses. At one rear gate was
a box of pouches being sold in aid of Ukraine
refugees. Margaret bought one.
We
eventually emerged at the north end of the
village. Making our way back south we were
struck by the vast number of tiny, old terraced
houses, interspersed by some dwellings of
much grander proportions.
Bang
on time, 5:15, we arrived back at the car.
The OSB yard was still busy so we
didn’t call in. We just drove home
in the glorious evening sunshine, reminiscing
about what an interesting old village Warton
was in which to wander.
