: Cloud on the Crinkles
Tuesday
23rd June 2022
There wasn’t any when we set off. We could see all the hills in the upper Langdale
Valley- round from Side Pike to Rossett Pike.
In fact it was a nice day with intermittent sunshine. Just right for walking.
Being members, parking is free
at the National Trust car park at the ODG but you have to present your
membership card. Strangely it doesn’t
accept tick remover cards which is what first came to hand!
We headed up the Cumbria Way
for a mile or so, remembering when we did it in 2008.
Ahead, the climb up
Rossett Gill looked intimidating. On the
other hand, Cumbria Way's Stake Pass seemed much more
benign, not that we wanted to go there today.
Instead we crossed the bridge over Mickleden Back and turned back down
the valley.
What a year for meadow and
hedgerow flowers. Splendid displays.
And a great view of Pike o’Stickle.
Having arrived back to the car
park with plenty of time and some energy in hand we decided to continue across
the fields. The views were good but not spectacular.
At the NDG we turned
back towards the car along the somewhat higher
and more undulating Cumbria Way. The tops
of the hills now directly in front of us were
starting to be shrouded.
“It should be the title of a book,”
said Margaret. “You know, a follow up to
that one your father liked”. I knew what
she meant. Robert Neil’s “Mist over
Pendle”.
Here is the sequel- Clare
Orchard’s “Cloud on the Crinkles”.
