GLW2303:
Roanhead and the Lost Keys
Saturday 11th November 2023.
“Come”
said I to the Dearly Beloved. “Let’s
go to Barrow where we can peruse comfortable
seating for our new dwelling”.
“Nay”
said she. “Let’s go beyond, to Roanhead
where we can make the most of this glorious
day, holding hands as we walk along the
golden sands”.
So
we did. Both.
It
was indeed a beautiful day with superb air
clarity. Across the Duddon Sands we
could see the Lake District panorama in
a formation to which we are unaccustomed.
Scafell had had its first dusting
of winter snow.
There
were a few people on the beach, mostly with
dogs.
We
walked west, crunching shells beneath our
feet. Beyond the windfarms we could
see the silhouette of the Isle of Man. Before
reaching Lowsy we decided to return. I
was anxious to be home before it went dark
and there was furniture browsing to be done.
We tried to cross the sand dunes but
it was slow and, at times, mildly precipitous
so we returned to the beach and retraced
our steps.
Back
at the car, I had a panic. Nowhere
could I find the house keys. They
had been separated from the car keys when
we left home so Margaret that could lock
up whilst I programmed the satnav. I
had a vague recollection of putting them
in my pocket when we left the car but they
weren’t there. Nor were they on or
under the seats or in the car crevices or
on the ground where we had parked. Then,
across the car park at the start of the
boardwalk, Margaret saw someone bend down,
pick something up then put it back on the
ground. Could it be the missing items?
I ran across and to my amazement and
relief they were. No need to call
for the Bay Sea and Key Rescue Service.
What a mischievous things, jumping
out of my pocket without permission.
We
celebrated our good luck with excellent
soup at Stollers café and then managed
to escape without having to buy the exceedingly
comfortable chairs on which I had been lounging.
We reached home as dusk was falling
where, to my delight, still lurking in my
pocket were those pesky keys.
