GLW1112 : Barbon and Casterton

Although undertaken as two walks a few days apart, they could easily be integrated.

GLW1112a :  Barbon

Saturday 5th November 2011

Dinah wanted to go and see the Jam Lady in Barbon so a shortish stroll round this lovely part of the Lune valley was planned.  With Alan and Patou of course.

From the lovely church, we headed more or less south, past some rather fine houses (including the large country seat, Whelprigg) until we reached Fell Garth and the minor road that returns north along the side of Barbon Fell (with distant views of the equally fine Barbon Manor) then back down to the church.

On the way home we stopped at the lovely little Quaker Meeting House at Brigflatts.

GLW1112 b:  Casterton

Saturday 12th November 2011

We had intended to park at Casterton but, no longer having any association with the school and not intending to visit the pub, we could not find anywhere suitable to leave the car so instead we drove up between church and school and parked by the bridge under the disused railway.

East then north across the fields we walked (Dinahless, Alanless and Patouless, sadly) until we reaching last time's turning point at Fell Garth.  We overlapped that walk briefly before climbing up through the wood to the Fellfoot Road heading due south, a road we would follow for 1½ miles.

What I had entirely forgotten about were the Andy Goldsworthy sheepfolds.  I have seen them before (see BB1033 : A Surplus of Sheepfolds) and it was noticeable how much more overgrown they were becoming.  Is that part of the art?  Or do they need maintaining?  Or has the artist simply trousered his large fee and moved on?

Other than one more sheepfold, there was little gained by continuing beyond the Fell Road.  We could have turned right for Casterton but instead we carried on through increasingly plain countryside to Bindloss Farm and then down to Old Casterton where more fine houses (and washing) were to be found.  Our return along Chapelhouse Lane took us past the house where Emma's friend Cathy-Ann used to live and back between the church and the school to the lane that led to the car, which was being guarded by a solitary goose..
