GLW1401
: Two from Troutbeck
Saturday
11th January 2014
These
two walks can be undertaken separately as gentle strolls
or put together for a larger circuit:
A
: Skelghyll and back
B
: Around Troutbeck
A
: Skelghyll and back
We
parked near Town
End, the old National
Trust owned house in Troutbeck. Unfortunately it was
closed for the winter (as was its car park) so we were
unable to visit.
Instead,
we walked along Robin Lane as far as Hol Beck, just
before High Skelghyll then returned past Low Skelghyll
along Skelghyll Lane to Troutbeck, passing evidence
of the Thirlmere to Manchester pipeline that we will
be following soon when we follow the Thirlmere Way.
A
good clear afternoon after all the rain we have had
in the previous weeks. Excellent views, particularly
south down Windermere and west to the Coniston and Langdale
ranges.
Distance:
3.0 miles; Height climbed:
534 feet
B
: Around Troutbeck
We
resisted the temptation of the old Post Office which
now serves as a cafe and headed down the steep hill
to Church Bridge, through the Churchyard to the children's
playground where we had our picnic. Afterwards
we went northwards across fields and lane to High Green,
a little above the closed-for-January Mortal Man Hotel.
Returned south along the village road to the car,
passing many old properties en-route, plus three wells,
named after Saints James, John and Margaret (against
which she posed)!
Distance:
2.4 miles; Height climbed:
298 feet
