GLW1801
: A Rest on Reston
Sunday
7th January 2018
Best
day of the year so far and Emma had kindly volunteered
to go see Gran so we made the most of it. I thought
back to my big birthday walk (
47DON=70
) in which the BOOTs went over Reston Scar to meet up
with the SLIPPERs at Potter Tarn. I remembered
thinking at the time that the first stage would be ideal
for one of our Great Little Walks. And so it proved
to be.
We
were a bit concerned when we set off that a naughty
cloud was going to block off the sun, contrary to its
instructions from the Met Office. As we climbed
Reston Scar it would allow the sun to peep at us then
cover it up again.
There
was a very chill wind blowing and it was much more pleasant
when the sun reached us.
Fortunately
by the time we reached the summit the cloud had given
up and had moved on to annoy others. We found a ledge
sheltered from the breeze with a glorious view over
to the Lake District hills.
Just
the place for a brew. A rest on Reston.
Apart
from the steep last few feet, the walk over to the Hugill
Fell summit, another fine view point, is very gentle,
made more pleasant by the freezing conditions underfoot.
A day earlier it would have been rather boggy.
The
drop down to the valley proved slightly awkward at times,
especially on the corrugated concrete track by the house
on which not all the ice had melted.
Scroggs
Bridge was a decision point. Should we continue
on the 47DON=70 or return to Staveley along the bridle
path.
We
chose the latter, returning to Staveley and Wilf's for
a late lunch.
A
Great Little Starter for 2018.
