The
Windermere Way
02 : Wray Castle to Bass Rock
Sunday
8th October 2017
We’re
not good at getting up early so an 8:30 departure was
a bit of a challenge for us. Fortunately, for Ian
& Cynthia early risings are the norm rather than a problem so today could
be arranged in order that Margaret could get back in
time to visit Granny on the dot of two o’clock.
Start
point, again, was Wray Castle from where we could see
the mist slowly clearing from the hills. It was a pleasant
morning with sunny periods offering fine views from
time to time between the lakeside trees. This time we
would head
south along the west side of the lake.
After
a couple of miles and a stop at Bass Rock, the walk
changed radically. We left the lake to climb a
steep stone-stepped path that led relentlessly up through
the forest alongside Belle Grange Beck. Eventually
this levelled out and we were able to follow a wide
and well surfaced forest trail for some distance before
once again climbing up through the wood to emerge at
our target- the summit of Latterbarrow.
What
a splendid viewpoint this is in all directions. Coniston
Old Man, Wetherlam.....
.....
The Crinkles, Bowfell, Langdales .....
.....
Fairfield Horseshoe, Red Screes and the Kentmere fells.....
.....
the
Howgills....,
.....Ingleborough
and even Heysham Power Station which could be seen
glowing in the far distance.
Sadly
it was starting to cloud over somewhat. Our
descent to the east was quite steep but had one of the
fix-the-fells stone staircases to make things easier
as long as you don’t slip on the wet bits.
After
a bit of road work we reached Hole House and followed
an old and very pleasant track across the fields above
Blelham Tarn.....
.....eventually to emerge at Wray Vicarage,
just a short stroll from the Castle.
Unfortunately
St Margaret’s Church was closed so I can’t report on
any interesting aspects other than the fact that it
is now privately owned and not open for worship.
Good
time had been made and the mission succeeded in its
objective- Margaret (who to me is a saint but not the
one of that church) was delivered to visit her mother
at Summerhill bang on two o’clock.

PS
Can you guess what that is dangling from my pocket in
the team picture?
