BB1907 : A Valentine's Day Surprise

Wednesday 13th February 2019

Valentine’s Day and there I was, Billy Nomates.

Then James phoned.  "Don," he said. "Come with me and let me take you to a higher place".  What a nice surprise.  How could I resist?  We called in at the bakery in Staveley to buy butties and there, on the counter, Valentine cookies called to us. Spread The Love.  Temptation before we had even begun.

We parked on Moorhowe Road where often there is a clear view of the Coniston Fells but not yet today.  Along the Dubbs Road we strode, climbing gently past its reservoir.....

..... and almost as far as the Garburn Road

At a ladder stile we turned to tackle the much steeper ground over Backstone Barrow and on to Sour Howes.  The day was clearing but the distant valleys were still shrouded in mist- those folk on the high tops enjoying what must have been a superb view over the clouds.

Rounding Moor Head, we turned for Sallows then stopped for lunch at a grouse butt.  Once fed, we decided to continue clockwise, down over Long Crag to Whiteside End and the bridle path that leads to (or in our case, away from) Kentmere village.

Eventually there are several choices of paths; our selection was for High Borrans which led us eventually back to the car.

By now, the hills had thrown off all their shrouds and presented a fine skyline.

However, it was not time to linger.  Our loved ones awaited us.  I can’t speak for James’ evening but I can report that I gave Margaret a great surprise.

I plied her with champagne then actually cooked a proper meal for her, not one of your "just add water" types.  Red Lentil and Squash Curry*.

That surprised me, too!
