GLW1803

Happy
birthday to me. How to celebrate? Normally
the cherry blossom is out to help me. Not this
year. Too wet and cold. Today was supposed
to be the day that England basked in sunshine. Unfortunately
Cumbria is no longer in England, or at least wasn't
until late in the afternoon.
In
January, GLW1801, I took Margaret on the first part
of the big 47DON=70 walk- the Reston Scar section that
she hadn't done. Today, 47DON=70 + 1, it seemed
appropriate to take her round the one other missing
section.
We
retraced January's steps from Staveley, up the valley
and past the somewhat scruffy Scroggs Farm with its
dilapidated buildings and pile of abandoned tyres. Its
redeeming feature was that, contrary to the blossom,
the bluebells were making an early appearance.
From
the road, the missing section headed over to Low Elfhow
then up and across a couple of fields to the tumbledown
buildings where the BOOTs had their lunch on 47DON=70
and where we had ours today.
Next we dropped down
to Hall Lane then up alongside the stream to Ghyll Bank
which is where we turned south.
There were many lambs
cheerfully frolicking with Brunt Knott and Potter Fell
as the backdrop. However, one poor thing had tucked
itself away almost out of sight behind a bush.
Its
mother wanted to come to the rescue but couldn't see
him. She sniffed at one but the scent was wrong.
Eventually "our" lamb bleated "Aahm heaaah, mammaaaa"
and they were reunited.
A happy scene.

Our
route back to Staveley took us along by Littlewood Farm
(with its private graveyard and spanking new farmhouse),
past Piked Howe (more dilapidated buildings) then down
a pleasant old trail between gorse bushes to the minor
roads that led back to Barley Bridge.
By
now Cumbria was in sunshine. It was a Happy Birthday,
made even more so in the evening at Pedro's with Emma
& co.
