Italian Diary, May 2018
Thursday
3rd May: Naples
- Lovely room in Grand
Style (flock wallpaper and marble bathroom).
Dined in grand style on blueberry muffin
and lemon biscuits (provided by hotel as a present!)
Friday
4th May: Naples
- Rainy
morning but as we set off weather improved to
short sharp showers. Excellent for exploring.
Followed guide book walk up through Chiaie,
via Piaazza Plebisato- up to Piazza Trieste-
& Trento. Then up via Chiaia to 17th
C Porto di Chiaia. Found lift up to Santa
Maria deh Angheli through typical Naples narrow
streets to famouns Military Acadamy where we
were turned away.
- Down
left and back onto Via Chiaia. Stopped
for coffee where we heard from Jilly Bennet
who said the Cupello Sansevero- a moving veiled
Christ sulpture was the place to go.
- Abandoning
Via Chiai we re-traced our steps to Piazza Trieste
and Trento to up Via Toledo past more narrow
Naples streets with washing and flags. At
Piazza Comita we had genuine Naples Pizza (?!)
at historic pizza spot! Then cut across
to Via Croce and up to the Cappella where crowds
awaited us. Obviously the place to be.
Queued for 30 minutes but
definitely worth the wait- sculptures lovely.
- Crossed
up to Via del Tribunali to Duomo which was disappointing
in comparison (overdone). Taxi back to
hotel.
- Weather
still raining . Tired so didn't change
and rushed over to La Scialuppa on the waterfront
in Borgo Marinaro near Castel. Let us
have last 2 places before booked parties arrived.
Excellent. D: fried fish. M:
spaghetti (al dente) with seafood. Little
chat with owner about how busy he was.
