BB2433 : An Embroidered Tale?

Thursday 11th November 2024

For some strange reason certain unkind people think that I embroider my reports somewhat.  As if.  Except for this one.

The day started oddly with Stan losing his glasses and having to retrace his steps to his house only to find that he had left them on the seat of Robert’s car.  Then I did more or less the same thing with my phone.  What are we like?

John, who had his lovely Portuguese Water Dog, Bonnie, with him, had devised a gentle round Sedbergh route starting from the central car park.  The main street is looking in pretty good condition, no doubt thanks to the support that the town gets from the School and doting parents.

Tony insisted that we should take the opportunity to visit St Andrew’s Parish Church.

This was no great surprise and we were happy to go along with the suggestion.  Whilst Robert examined the organ, Tony found what led to the title of this report.  Embroidery.  The Sedbergh Embroidery to be precise, crafted by the Sedbergh Stitchers.

Formed in 1993, their objective was to create a canvas work that depicts the landscape, historic buildings and social background of the area.  All in a five foot square.  A second, small panel of similar ilk was created in 2004.

A wander through the Sedbergh School grounds .....

..... took us to the war memorial, a grim reminder of how many young leaders of men were killed, particularly in the First World War.

There were numerous instances of repeated surnames, no doubt brothers in arms.

We wandered along by the river.....

..... then up to Ellerthwaite which was to be our turning point.

The path back was through farm fields.  Stone Hall particularly intrigued us; old, seemingly sad and empty but the gardens very well tended.

Guess what happened when we returned to Sedbergh?  Stan mislaid his glasses and I, my phone.  Again.  That’s what we’re like.

We ended up in the Red Lion, a friendly, cosy pub where Tony told tales of yore of how he used to dash from Kendal at 10:30 on a Saturday night to take advantage of Sedbergh’s later closing time.  An embroidered tale?  Knowing Tony, I suspect not!
