BB2434 : K-E-N-T-M-E-R-E

Thursday 14th November 2024

Those of you of a certain age will no doubt remember Radio Luxembourg broadcasting on 208 metres medium wave.  This was in the days before pirate radios.

If so, two names are probably etched into your minds.  One is that of a certain wrestler, hospital porter, charity worker, seat-belt advocate and pedophile with his “Under the bedclothes club”.

The other would be Horace Batchelor for his "Infra-Draw Method" of winning money on football pools, memorably turning the previously obscure Somerset town of

"Keynsham, spelt K-E-Y-N-S-H-A-M"

into a household name throughout the country.

After a chilly start, it was a glorious morning but bad weather was expected in the early afternoon so, rather than visit the Pike, we opted just to head up to the reservoir.  You know, the one that's K-E-N-T-M-E-R-E.

To make it more interesting we approached by Hallow Bank and Smallthwaite Knott, there to take lunch.

Then, to make it even more interesting, we took the direct descent to the reservoir as my Rectus Femorii continue to remind me.

At the reservoir we met some ladies.  “Who are you?” they asked.  Of course we answered in true Horace fashion, “We are the BOOTboys.  That’s spelt B-O-O-T-B-O-Y-S”.  It never fails to impress.

The threatened bad weather never materialised but the sun is low in the sky these days so we returned to the western side of the valley to make our way back to the cars.  Where then to go?  Isn’t the answer obvious?

To the Eagle and Child at that place spelt S-T-A-V-E-L-E-Y.
