: Just Like The Good Old Days
Wednesday
27th November 2024
I
sometimes get accused of writing a load
of nonsense about our walks. Comments like
“that didn’t happen” or “it wasn’t me” or
even “we didn’t go there”. Mention
of bovine excreta has also been heard. I
have to confess there have been times when
the urge to tell “a” story outweighed the
truth of “the” story but hopefully produced
something that had a glimmer of the spirit
of the day and was somewhat more entertaining.
I wouldn’t accuse my friends of similar
characteristics but…..
Anyway,
one of our number who has been absent for
some time, recently expressed interest in
re-joining us as long as we were doing something
decent. He meant in terms of distance and
height climbed.
It’s
a pity he wasn’t with us today. In
glorious sunshine we set off from Grasmere,
first to climb Lang How, which seemed rather
more challenging than I remembered, then
the legs kicked in and we strode over Blea
Crag, Sergeant Man as far as High Raise.
After Pike o’Stickle, Harrison Stickle
and Pavey Ark, we dropped down to Easedale
Tarn and back to Grasmere, a distance of
just over 12 miles and nearly 4,000 feet
of climbing. Just like the Good Old
Days.
Oh
you gentlemen of England now a-bed, don’t
you wish you had been here on this St Facundus
Day?
Or
would you prefer the truth?
We
did actually visit Lang How. It was
a glorious day though much of the climb
was in the shade, so cold and a touch icy
at times.
At
the summit, after viewing the aforementioned
(and many more) tops that we didn’t visit.....
.....
we turned south east, heading for Silver
Howe. The air was so clear we could
see Blackpool Tower where Tony was getting
stuck into his fifth pint of the day (which
is why he wasn’t with us).
We
intended to descend by the gully but had
a dilemma. At the top was bright sunshine
but a cold wind. The gully was sheltered
but in shade. Where to have lunch?
Sunshine won.
After
that, we descended by the gully
then reached the wall where
Robin and Stan started a strange
back to back activity.
I
find it hard to explain what
was happening but they seemed
to enjoy it.
If
you click on the picture on
the right, you will get a better
idea of what they were doing
If
you can make out what they were
up to, please let me know. Holly
was perplexed also.

As
soon as we got back the car it started to
rain. It is amazing how often the
rain (if there is any) holds off until we
reach the shelter of the cars. Our
next target, of course, was Staveley’s Eagle
and Child. Just look what was spotted
on the wall on the right hand side of the
picture. How appropriate! Just
like the Good Old Days.
