BB2503
: Reasons to be Cheerful parts 4 and 5
Thursday
23rd January 2025
Normally our annual lunch is
preceded by a walk, often to Gurnal Dubbs.
This year, the forecast was not encouraging so we went straight to the
Eagle and Child for a jolly time. Somehow
Ian Dury came to mind. Reasons to be Cheerful. Parts 1,
2 and 3 were covered a long time
ago. 15 years in fact. BB1006 . This was
the long awaited Reasons to be
Cheerful part 4.

Today the weather was much
better, possible the best this year.
Reasons to be Cheerful part 5!
The brief was a stimulating
walk, not too long and no pub as I had grandson duties later on in the
afternoon. We (TV Mike, Mick and I)
decided on the Scars but as the roads across are still closed, even for
pedestrians (for reasons not so Cheerful that continue to baffle us), we would
start from the Kendal Tramway. No,
Kendal has not gone the way of major cities and introduced a tram network. It is the name of path that once upon a time
led up to a small quarry on Kettlewell Crag.

Clear air, blue skies;
what more
could you want? Reason to be Cheerful,
indeed.

We crossed the golf course.....

and
headed over to the big Cunswick Scar cairn.
TVM and Mick belong to another walking group as well and their habit is
to stop at 11 for elevenses so we did.
Coffee and flap jack made by my dear wife to Mick’s recipe. Excellent.

Thereafter, we continued north for an extension that none of us had done
before. We took our lives in our hands
and crossed the Crook Road following which we had a pleasant stroll through
grassy meadows, interspersed with some less pleasant boggy areas around
gates. Returning to the road at Low Brundrigg,
we searched for the footpath marked on the map that supposedly leads to Fell
Gate. It wasn’t there. So rather we were rather less Cheerful having
to take our lives even more into our hands, continuing along the Crook Road
until we picked up the farm track to Fell Gate.
Back into Cheerful territory.
As we headed down towards
Cunswick Hall, we heard the sounds of others being Cheerful whilst certain
birds were distinctly not. A shoot was
in progress. Climbing up Gamblsmire
Lane, we could see the beaters in action and many birds escaping.

Lunch was taken on reaching Cunswick Scar
following which we headed down to the bypass and once more took our lives in
our hands, crossing it on foot. Well,
with the bridges closed, what else could we do?
A pleasant stroll over Kendal
Fell golf course rounded off the outing.
We had survived the perils of the road and enjoyed the pleasures of the
day. Definitely
Reasons to be Cheerful, part 5.

Afternote:
I am told that one of the bridges
has since been opened for pedestrians, cyclists
and light traffic.
