BB1041
: A Whinash Winterscleugh
Wander
Wednesday
10th November 2010
I
am pleased to report that my completion
of the Wainwrights (see BB1037)
has not gone entirely unnoticed!
In
addition to the several kind comments made
by readers of these pages, I was recently
invited to an unexpected awards ceremony.
Commissioned
by Jamie and presented by Luca, I am now
the proud possessor of:
The
Wainwrights Trophy
Thanks,
guys! I look forward to passing it on to
the next in the family to complete the set.

When
I told Bryan, he suggested that it would not happen
in my lifetime. There's a challenge for the next
generation(s)!
Today,
it was a cold and frosty morning in more than one way.
Wednesdays are normally reserved for Margaret
but I had understood her to say that she was having
to take her mother to the dentist. Given also
that the forecast for tomorrow involved 100 mph winds
and plenty of rain, it seemed logical in the circumstances
to move the BB outing to today. What I didn't
realise until this morning was that Granny had moved
her dental appointment to free up Margaret's day. Dog
house here we come!

Bryan
was very understanding and suggested a shortish walk
up Whinash. We parked at Huck's Bridge and tried
to go down the north side of Borrowdale only to find
the footpath closed because of erosion.

Retracing
our steps, we set off down the south side to the new
and huge steppingstones across the beck before heading
up the Breasthigh Road.
Bryan
and the new stepping stones
This
is actually quite a steep climb and we were warm
in the sun despite the odd icy patch on the ground.
From the col we turned right on a gentle climb
up partly frozen moorland. The distant views of
snow tipped hills were superb.

We
made our way over Whinash to the summit of Winterscleugh
where we took an early lunch.

Thereafter,
we continued a while along the ridge until we met the
bridle path then turned down into Borrowdale (the lesser
known Westmorland one, of course) and followed the river
back upstream to the car.
Dropping
down to Borrowdale
Thankfully,
this lovely unspoilt valley has been saved firstly from
becoming a reservoir and more recently from being turned
into a time-share resort.

Being
a relatively short walk, albeit a glorious one in terms
of views, there was time for me to attempt to claw my
way out of the dog house. I phoned Margaret, told
her to get herself ready and on returning home, took
her up Helm for more glorious views. There was a distinct
thaw.
