BB1436
: More Training For Khiraule
Wednesday
8th October 2014
I
think Philip was hoping for something rather more challenging
in preparation for the Himalayas but foul weather
was expected in the afternoon so a relatively short
and nearby expedition was preferred.
The
start (and end) point was The Pheasant at Casterton,
a fact that had Tony chuckling all morning about naughty
tongue twisters.
To
reach Barbon Fell we first had to cross the Fellfoot
Road. This would be no more than an insignificant
bridle path were it not for the Andy Goldsworthy sheepfolds.

We didn't go on a search as we saw most if not
all on BB1033
A Surplus Of Sheepfolds.
We did, however, stop to examine one,
typically with a large boulder at its centre, located
at the junction
before pressing on up the hill.

Bullpot
Farm
The
initial objective was Brownthwaite Pike but once at
the cairn we decided to press on across the rough ground
to the trig point and once at the trig point we decided
to press on across the rough ground down Hoggs Hill
to Bullpot Farm.

Bullpot
Farm is the home of the Red
Rose Cave and Pothole Club.
We had no intention of engaging in such activity
but we met a couple, no spring chickens, who were. They
showed us the chasm down which they intended to vanish.

into the void
Given the amount of ropes and spiders and clips
they were carrying plus the aura of confidence they
exuded from their dedicated suits, I am sure that they
would safely reappear in due course, after they had
descended their 100 metres of ropes. But would
it be raining by the time they emerged? We didn't
intend to find out.
Instead
we dropped down to Barbon Beck where we stopped to feed
Tony. There is a footbridge only 100 yards upstream
but Mike and James both decided to boldly leap from
boulder to boulder to make the crossing. Although
cameras were at the ready for disasters, both succeeded
with only minor wetnesses. The rest of us took
the wimps' path.

There
is little else to report. The incoming rain held
off whilst we returned to the welcoming Pheasant and,
somewhat to our surprise, and perhaps frustration, continued
to hold off whilst we returned home.

Whether
this was sufficiently arduous training for
Philip's imminent expedition, he didn't
say.
Bryan,
who knows a thing or two about these things,
is advocating that Philip puts in extra
training on a mountain bike.
He
suggests that the Cuilins would be perfect
terrain.
