: Not The Royal Wedding
Friday
29th
April 2011
Initially
I thought we were going to have a good turnout for the
Not the Royal Wedding Walk. Despite the
fact that Philip, Robert and Mike had all taken steps
to flee the country, there was still a positive response
from Pete, James and Bryan.
Indeed,
only Tony confessed to being fascinated by the topic
and preferred a day slunked in front of his TV watching
the proceedings to a BOOTboys
day in the sunshine on the fells. But then both
Pete and James gave backword so in the end Bryan and
I were the only ones to reject the pantomime and take
to the hills.
It
was a lovely morning, albeit with a surprisingly strong
breeze blowing. We parked at Waterhead, Ambleside
and after a brief unintentional detour around the Roman
building site, found the footbridge over the river to
begin the ascent of Loughrigg.

and then

The
first part is a relatively steep ascent (or am I just
unfit?) to Loughrigg Brow and Lily Tarn.

Thereafter
it was a meandering and undulating walk across the fell
to find the summit. Bryan explained that this area is
used for orienteering exercises and you can understand
why.

We
had a drinks break just below the summit
with Bryan trying out his gas stove whilst
I remained loyal to my flask.
We
then dropped down through Intake Wood and
across to the grounds of the rather fine
YHA building with the intention of repeating
the process over to Silver Howe.
Howe-ever
(!) the sky clouded over and the wind became
stronger so when, after a stiffish climb,
Bryan gave me the option of cutting back
down to the Langdale Valley, I took the
opportunity to ponder the question over
lunch near Raven Crag.

Meanwhile,
Bryan took the opportunity to brew up again on his stove.
And then again after he knocked the whole lot
over! After this any thought of carrying on had
by now left me and we opted for a pleasant if longish
saunter back to the car.

Down
to Elterwater village then along by the lake where we
had another photo taken to match the 1984 one of Jamie
and Emma!
On
to Skelwith Bridge we strolled. Then we climbed to Skelwith
Fold and through fields and woodland paths by the side
of the road back most of the way to Ambleside.
By
now, the clouds had passed over, the wind had dropped
and it was a very pleasant afternoon. Just right
for an ice cream overlooking the landing stages at Waterhead.

Script: Subsequently Tony e-mailed me to justify
his absence with the comment: Was sat watching
with my box of Kleenex. Worth it just to see her sister
looking stunning!!
