BB1706
: GOBB it !

The
South Lakes Donald is away. And as usually when that’s
the case, which let’s face it isn’t very often, the
rest of the BB’s find it quite difficult to get themselves
organised. This time though, Mike was feeling like walking
following a few weeks lost to the lurgi, but only managed
to get one BOOTboy
to come.
So
it was that Martin and Mike decided to not drive very
far and invite a couple of "guests”. Yes, Guests
of Boot Boys, acronym spells GOBB, which Mike thought
was a nice sounding word. Simple things….
Mike
invited Simon, who he used to work with at the world
renowned (by some) Linthwaite House, and Martin invited
a local pal, albeit an off-comer, John Sl, famed retired
geologist.
The
plan was to meet at Mike’s on the Howe,
walk over Whitbarrow, and rock up at the
Derby Arms. John would need to probably
be driven back as he’s regaining fitness,
so we arranged for the ladies to meet us
at the pub in the hope that they’d pay.
Fat chance.
Simon,
who has a dodgy ankle, is extremely fast
on the flat. This is probably because he
has a springer spaniel called Millie, who
came along for the run.

We
stormed up into the woods, where Martin explained how
the The
Township and the Landowners
works. Click on the link for the details.
As
we strode out onto the moorland we encountered some
gorgeous cattle; alas NOT Belted Galloways, but pretty
good looking all the same.
When
we got higher up and near to Lord’s Seat, we were buffeted
by a strong wind. The views were not that great but
at least it wasn’t raining.
What
is Martin waving ?
At
the South end of Whitbarrow, all became calm as we walked
down through the woods, and we found a new path in this
familiar territory to try at the North East end of Witherslack.
Everyone
arrived at the same time at the Derby Arms, coming from
three different directions; brilliant co-ordination
and communication on our part.

A
large lunch menu interested nobody. It was ham sandwiches
all round (which were really good), and several pints
later, that is one each not including the ladies, we
waddled out, fully sated.
Then
there were just three; Martin, Simon and Mike. Oh, and
Millie the dog.
The
return journey took a different turn at Whitbarrow,
going round the bottom.....
.....
and over the slab, where all three of us found it treacherously
slippery. Crampons or metal studded golf shoes may have
been useful, but walking boots weren’t. Click on the
link if you want to see what the slab would look like
from a mountain
bike going at high speed.
This
well known rock climbing area also comes under the jurisdiction
of the Landowners. Martin can tell you some interesting
altercations from the past but if we wrote about it
might get picked up as fake news.
We
carried on round past Rawson’s Farm, and were so busy
chatting that we took a wrong turn, and instead of finishing
off the walk via the footpath in the woods, ended up
on the road at John Sl's Farm.
Fortuitously
we bumped into Bill Sharp who was catching moles with
a cake knife, he’s a local farmer whose family live
at Flodder Hall (something to do with flooding!), and
who knows Martin well. For some interesting history
click on The
Houses of Lyth.
Arriving
back at Mike’s (not mentioned in the history) place
a cup of tea was the order of the day. Normally BOOTboys
have a pint at the end but we reckon we’d had our share
already!
