BB1707
: Around Robin (all day!)
Wednesday
22nd February 2017
Even
more unusually, the Donald of the South Lakes
is away again. That often means the BB’s don’t manage
to get out. Once again Mike was wanting to get a bit
more walking-fit. So a round robin was issued.
Terry
was coming. John hadn’t got back into the routine of
not booking anything for Wednesdays and Thursday. Tony
was away somewhere (choose from the following activities:
pubs / fishing / metal things / industrial heritage
/ Lady
Anne) but Robin and Terry were free.
Then Terry got
a nasty headache.
So it was just Mike and Robin.

The
objective was to go round Loughrigg from the Eastern
side, then ascend from the Western side. Down to Grasmere
via Red Bank, then over the A591 for Alcock Tarn and
back to the car. Forecast was windy but dry.
From
parking Robin’s limo under Loughrigg Brow, there’s a
steep short climb up a new slick tarmac road to where
there used to be a golf
course. Now it
looks like there’s a new house going up.
The
intrepid pair smartly overtook a dawdling family, and
carried on round the track to Loughrigg Tarn. We should
have turned right before Intake Wood, but we overshot,
so intense was the chat, to the benefit of finding a
30 year old Land Rover ripe for refurbishment.
It’s
a shortish ascent up and was ‘right windy’ at the top.
Disappointedly we found the dawdling family had beaten
us to it; they’d had taken the direct route up.
The
descent North off Loughrigg is full of rich views over
Grasmere up to the Lion & the Lamb and Dunmail Raise.
By now it was well past Tony time, so we had our lunch
on the green at Grasmere.
It all went a bit downhill
from here metaphorically speaking with nostalgic conversations
and pathetic imitations of and about:
Derek and
Clive Live, Murray Roman (Check out the legendary
You
can’t beat people up and have them say I love you
), Round the Horne, Steptoe & Son, Python.
Much mirth!

Going
West involved another climb up towards Butter Crag.
First, the tricky bit, we had to cross a lively stream
which, from the night before, was full and fast. Robin
managed it with a nifty hop skip and jump. Mike got
a foot wet. Up to Alcock Tarn and glorious views
South/East, even on a dull day.
Then
it was on to the Coffin Route, and to Rydal Hall, where
there are now many Yurts and an excellent cafe, which
we didn’t stop at!
The
rest is mostly tarmac road and back to the limo. An
excellent pint was enjoyed at the Lyth Valley Hotel.
Y’all missed a nice little walk which turned out to
be 13.4 miles and 3131’. (Tony, the plotted, planned
walk was 10 miles!)
