BB1712 : Cut Short By The Baps

Thursday 6th April 2017

I blame the landlord of the Kings’ Head.  If only he had kept the kitchen open through a Thursday afternoon, we could have posted some more respectable statistics. Admittedly it had been a Tuesday, but when Margaret and I had visited recently we had really enjoyed a mid-afternoon treat of fish finger baps and deep fried potato skins.  Sounds odd but they are delicious.  We BOOTboys were hoping for the same. But today, in order to fulfil our wishes (and fill fully our bellies), we had to be back to Burton-in-Kendal for 2 p.m..  Consequence:- the walk would need to be curtailed.

The start point was at Farleton, using the footpath alongside Townend Farm.  This may only have been a short walk but it kicks off with a vicious quarter mile section where the slope is about 45°.  If that weren’t bad enough, the surface is pure scree and there is nothing to hold on to.  Steel Fell is a doddle in comparison.  Fortunately it is only short and it got most of the day’s climbing out of the way.

After admiring the view of and from Farleton Knott.....

.....we made our way over Newbiggin Crags , surrounded by limestone pavements, to cross the “Limestone Link” and enter the Hutton Roof Crags, encountering on the way, a microwave oven.  "What could this be for," we wondered, "out here in the countryside with no electricity supply."  Answer- to put you money in if you bought any of the free range eggs!

The paths through the woods are more developed than I remember from previous visits and it was easy to cross Uberash Plain and along Potslacks to find the summit trig point.  Another fine place to see if you can spot Blackpool Tower.  On my last visit I thought I saw the Tower but examination of the photos later on the computer proved it was a blade of a windmill.  This time it was the other way round.  I didn’t see The tower but saw plenty of windmills.  However when blown up on the screen, there it was.  I promise.  No computer trickery this time.  The real thing.  Expand the photo below to see for yourself.

Had there not been time pressures we would have visited the rolling countryside to the south and possibly returned to Burton via the canal.  However we were on a mission. We descended Dalton Crags via a forest track, following a wagon carrying newly felled trees.

Another woodland path, a short road stretch alongside the Dalton Hall business centre (Home Farm) and a few more fields led us back to the King’s Head’s Fish Finger Baps and deep Fried Potato Skins.

They did not disappoint.
