BB1723
: Errmmm...???
Thursday
7th July 2017
What shall we do today?
Errmmm….. was all the answer I heard.
After yesterdays’ marathon
(BB1722), an easier advantage was
required. The question was whether to go the east
side of Wastwater and knock of Illgill Head and Whin
Rigg or to complete
the western side- three Wainwrights and a bit longer?
Errmmm….. The short walk, please.
So the
East side it was to be even though this meant an
operation with the cars not far removed from the man crossing
the river with a fox, a goose and the corn.
Whilst the car shuffle took place, the non-drivers
waited at the Bracken Close car park at Wasdale Head.
This was notable for two
things. Firstly for the variety of birds on the
feeders. Secondly for the contest between
James and the National Trust’s man to prove who was
the better salesman.
Eventually Martin and John appeared in the one car
and we set off up the hill. On the map and indeed
from the distance it appeared to be a steady, reasonably
gentle climb.
In fact it felt harder than yesterday’s.
Was it a case of elderly, second day legs? Or
was it that there were no rocky bits to break the metronomic
march? Errmmm…..
Anyway, we eventually reached the top.
Which top?
There appeared to be three possibilities?
Which one was the highest?
Errmmm….. try all three with the altitude meter.
Once
decided, we set off for the next target, Whin Rigg, which
is a little lower so not too great a problem
for weary legs.
On
the way we saw two people with computer, seemingly on
some sort of field trial. It turned out that he
was from RSPCB (I think) and she was undertaking a masters
degree at Newcastle University They were conducting
research into the eggs of a rare type of butterfly.
We returned to Nether Wasdale
by what looked on paper to be the easier, bridle path
route but it proved to be extremely boggy.
Back at the Strand, the question was, what should we
drink to celebrate our achievement?
Errmmm…???
Yes,
seven pints of Errmmm...??? please - the brilliant name
for the pub’s micro-brewery beer. The beer for
the undecided.
My thanks to John and Terry for organising our Western
tour, to John and Martin for the chauffeuring, Stan for
his guiding, Robin for leading the charges up the hill
and James for being King James. And all for their comitibution
companionship.
The question now is, where to go next year?
Errmmm..???
