: Three Knees Down
Wednesday
9th August 2017
The
Don said keep it short. With two outings this week it’s
a lot of work for the blogger in chief. Fair enough.
I
was originally going out on the Thursday walk but I
now had to be in for the painter so I offered to do
a walk for those who could only do Wednesday. That meant
Sam, John H and myself. Then Slim Slide Terry said,
as he was so much lighter these days, he’d come too
as a warm up for Thursday. Eight knees set out. Not
all would return feeling as good as when they left.
I’d
mapped out a round I hadn’t done much of before. Park
at Kirkstone Inn; take some of the height off. Go up
behind the Inn to John Bell’s banner, down through Caudale
to the farm, then climb up Caiston Glenn to Red Screes
and back down to the Inn. Only 7.5 miles roughly, and
a mere 3480’ of ascent (sorry Sam).
Luckily
I’d copied our leader in and he wisely advised to go
the other way round. Red Screes would be easier up than
down. He was right of course. So that was the plan.
Last
time I’d attempted to go up Red Screes was a quite few
years ago with Jean. We’d managed to take a wrong turn
and had found ourselves stranded on a ledge.
This
time though we were well equipped with fancy Garmins
and OS maps on our phones. So no mistakes. Or at least
only a couple. Of minor ones.
It
was very windy on top so we didn’t hang around, and
even coming down into Caiston Glen we were met by a
cold wind. August in England.
We
enjoyed lunch eventually, well after Tony time, in a
lovely meadow just short of Caudalebeck Farm. The sun
was warm.
But we still had a way to go so no time
to sunbathe. The climb up to Caudale Mine and
the Moor beyond is relentless.
At
some point Sam twisted his knee. Ouch. That was one
down. A little later I was sitting waiting to
be caught up and my knee was throbbing badly. Sam
overtook saying he just had to keep going or he’d seize
up.
On
the final descent from St Raven’s Edge I noticed John
hobbling a bit. Three knees down. But it was worth it.
We
really need a physiotherapist to come along on these
walks. Anyone know of one? Or as discussed at the Inn
over a swift beer, a mere masseur
would do.

Defies Gravity
I
promise that, apart from some minor cosmetic
tweaks to adjust the colour balance, this
is not one of my Photoshopped efforts but
a genuine photo.
It
is a sort of selfie taken by Tony some 380
feet above the ground in which he is seemingly
defying gravity in Blackpool.
Clearly
not a man concerned about vertigo.
