BB1732 : I Can't Remember.....!

Wednesday 6th September 2017

I can’t remember where we started from.  Probably near the Ribblehead viaduct.

I do remember that it seemed quite a long way round to the north side of Whernside and then a steepish final climb to the summit ridge.

I can’t remember whom I was with but I do know that whoever was leading took us down on an exceedingly steep slope straight to Winterscales.  When I later mentioned it to Stan, he told me that it was the race route.  He denied having been with us but I think he was.  I remember there being four of us.  Two skipped down the hill in Stan & Bryan style.  Who else could it have been?  The other two found it a struggle.  Me especially.  I don’t remember who the other struggler was. Maybe Pete?

I can’t remember how we returned to the car; not surprising seeing as I can’t remember where it was.

I can remember that it was a long time ago.  You weren’t thinking that it was today and that I had lost all my marbles, were you?  I know my short term memory isn’t great but it’s not that bad. It was probably about 2004 or 5.

Whernside

Today Stan was definitely with us. As was Tony.  I have no difficulty in remembering that as we all sit in the bar at the Mason's Arms in Ingleton.

We went the same way round as before.  But not down the race route, I hasten to add. I had intended to start from the Hill Inn and go clockwise but Stan asked me why?  I couldn't remember.  He said it was usual to go anti-clockwise so he carried on driving to Ribblehead where we parked then went up the long and gentle tourist route.  The wind was blowing strongly in our faces.  It was then that I remembered why I had wanted to go clockwise.  We would have had the wind on our backs.  Stan insisted that the views are better this way round.

Tony didn't need to remember when it was noon.  His stomach clock was accurate to the second.  He did need to forget his hunger for a while, however.

The clouds rolled in and the clouds rolled out.  Ingleborough, Pen-y-Ghent and Whernside all came, went and returned into view.

When we reached its summit, Whernside had gone.  Visibility was very limited.

Four ladies joined us at the summit shelter.  They were from Kendal.  They knew a couple of hoteliers who happen also to be BOOTboys.  I can't remember how they knew them!

The cloud lifted and we found our way down and back to Jericho (BB1615) and the 100 foot high viaduct (we counted the blocks).

Stan could remember where he had left the car.  We didn't fancy the Station Inn and the Hill Top was closed which is why I am sat here in the Mason's Arms.

As I compose this report, I start my second pint and my memory kicks in.

I can now remember that previous visit to Whernside.  It wasn't 2004 or 5.  It was 2007.  Ten years ago to the day.  BB0727.  It wasn't Stan and Bryan who romped down the hill.  It was Jamie and Mr Strideyman.  No one else.  And we'd already done Pen-y-Ghent.  Oh how the memory clings.  Or not.  I can't remember.
