: The Money Fairy
Wednesday
27th September 2017
Walking
along the track from Ings towards Sour Howes, Stan suddenly
stopped and said “Look at this!” He had found
a one pound coin and a twenty pence coin on the track.
Believe
or not, about five minutes later, Stan suddenly stopped
and said “Look at this!” He had found another
one pound coin and another twenty pence coin on the
track.
All
we could think was that the Money Fairy was on his shoulder
today. Lucky Stan. Lottery time?
Like
us, the fairy was probably keeping fairly low as the
forecast for the higher peaks would have blown her away.
However, by the time we approached the summit
of Sour Howes, I think she had sensibly retreated as no
more discoveries of the money kind were made.
En-route
we
did discover a large number of hairy caterpillars, quite
a few vole holes and
a strange cluster of things I find hard to describe.
They were a sort of blue and white and could almost
have been sweeties that had been lost and rain-washed.
But they weren’t. Tony informed us that sometimes beasts that ate other animals
or birds found parts indigestible and regurgitated them.
He concluded that these were eggs from the inside
of Lord knows what that had been sicked up by the predator.
If anyone can be more precise, please let us know.
Lunch
was taken on the descent towards Troutbeck and in many
ways that was unfortunate as it mean we had quit a strenuous
post prandial ascent to accomplish. This we did
to reach the summit of Wansfell Pike but on the way
I realised that for the second time today a footpath
had not been where the OS map said it should have been.
Had Stan not been so familiar with the area we
might have wasted more time looking for them. The
annoying thing is that on my phone I have new software
which has the latest OS map which is supposed to be
updated quarterly.
Hmm!
Our
descent to Ambleside led to a dilemma. Where to
go to celebrate the day’s achievement? The answer
came quickly. Not in Ambleside. Not because
of anything untoward about the place but simply that
the 555 arrived sooner than expected so we leapt aboard
back to Kendal where the same dilemma arose.
Solution?
The
Tap.
I had never previously been there, thinking
that there was no parking and Stan hadn’t
either.
So there we went.
The Tap is a newish micro-brewery
with a bar and sitting out area. Well worth a
visit. And thanks to the Money Fairy, at less
cost than you might have expected.

Until you realise
that the Money Fairy was actually a black hearted demon
who had been expelling cash from my pocket in rather
greater volume than had actually been spotted by my
companions.
No doubt the next folk to visit Sour Howes will be delighted
with their gifts from the Money Fairy. I hope
they put their findings to similar good effect.
