BB2007 : Armageddon - the Aftermath

Thursday 13th February 2020

For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.  And he gathered them together into a place called Armageddon.

Revelation 16 King James Version

We had seen what the spirits of devils had done in the place that looked like Armageddon.  In fact we had gathered there twice.  First on BB0710 and then in Armageddon Revisited, BB1206.

Some eight years since the revisit, I wanted to know what was the Aftermath.  I had a look on the internet to see if I could find anything relevant.

Well, if you are a smoker you could be interested in the Armageddon Aftermath Vape Mod that is said to be the only one that could survive the end of the world. Could it be a good reason to take up vaping?  It wasn't exactly what I was seeking.

The more erudite amongst you might relish Larry Sabato's Aftermath of Armageddon- an analysis of the 1973 Virginia Guberntatorial election, whatever that is.  It isn't what I wanted.

So, what did happen after Armageddon?  Baramap4 reports that the Shimmering Woman told Kitana she survived Armageddon and killed Shao Kahn.  Any the wiser? Me neither.

I was hopeful that we might get more information from Cacotopia so I turned to their opus Inhuman Agitation which contains an entry Aftermath of Armageddon.

Unfortunately this is not in the free public domain but there is a clue in their contemporaneous work From Man to Demon though it doesn't directly answer the question.  Click on the picture to judge for yourself.

Having tried and failed, we decided we had to find out for ourselves.

We were not sure the weather gods would let us.  The creepily gothic Wray Castle seemed a good starting point, mainly because it has a cafe where we could shelter until the rain had stopped.

It did stop and we set off down to the western shore of Windermere

Before long we reached the Bass Rock which is where the ancient track rises up into the woods.

Our initial objective was High Blind How, more prosaically called the Claife Heights trig point.  Although we had enjoyed fine views across the lake to the snow capped mountains where the mist was slowly lifting, there was no view here thanks to the forestation.  Maybe that is why there is the word "blind" in the name?  What we did see was an attractive, seemingly nameless tarn.

It was time to seek Armageddon.  Navigating through the woods was a bit tricky on occasion but soon we reached the site.  It would be wrong to say that it no longer looked like an ancient battlefield.  The evidence remains but vegetation is seeking to reclaim the devastated land.

On the other side lies Latterbarrow, boasting one of the larger cairns and some of the finest views.

From there, it was an easy descent back to the lake and the castle.

I was taken to task, following the last report, for not mentioning where the day's conclusion took place.  This week it was, for me, at a new venue.  Often we have ended up in Kendal at the Tap.  Today it was at its close neighbour and rival, the Barrel; the new bar for the Bowness Bay Brewing Company with its strange, mirrored ceiling.

It would be wrong to term our visit the Aftermath as that implies the end of an unpleasant event.  I need a word for the first movement of what could become a series of pleasant events.

Overture?  Over to you!
