: In The Land of the Damson King
Wednesday
19th August 2020
Once
upon a time there were 8 bootboys who were
all going for a lovely walk in the Lakes.
Then one had to drop out so there were just
7. Then another had an appointment to attend
so then there were just 6. Then another
also had an appointment so now there were
just 5. Then another found that he couldn’t
go either so that left 4. Then another found
he couldn’t go, so that just left 3; the
PMT group (Philip Mike and Tony).
They
decided to meet at Mike’s house which would
be easy to get back to as they knew where
he lived.
They
packed up their ginger beer and sandwiches
and set off on their adventure. How the
others would miss this. T
They soon enjoyed
seeing lots of different sorts of butterflies,
but didn’t know all their names.
It
was a very warm day and there was no-one
else about.
Eventually
they found their way over the Scar to Bill's
House, but Bill, the Damson King, wasn’t
in, which was very disappointing.
They
walked past Cowmire Hall where a man makes
Damson gin.
They
almost missed their next turning because
the sign had been hidden by trees.
They
had a lovely lunch in a farmer’s field which
smelt of fresh cut hay. They were feeling
very sleepy, but didn’t have time to sleep
because one of them wanted to go to the
pub.
So
they packed up their things and even remembered
to pack their funny padded seats which stops
them getting a sore bottom.
They
decided to take a short cut through the
woods because one of them wanted to go to
the pub, and didn’t want to delay.
At
the top of the steep path they met some
other people and said hi. The first they’d
met all day.
Tony,
the Photographer, almost lost Philip and
Mike because he’d found a tunnel to take
pictures of. Or was it a mine?
The
way back from the top of Whitbarrow was
straightforward and they didn’t get into
any more scrapes.
Once
they got back to the house, they eagerly
leapt into their cars and went for a beautiful
pint of beer at the Wheatsheaf in Brigsteer.
The lady behind the bar thought the boys
would be disappointed because the pub had
stopped serving food. But they weren’t worried
about that at all.
