BB2042 :
Last Days of Lockdown 2?
Wednesday
25th & Thursday 26th November 2020
Once
again it was to be a scatter gun event but
this time staged over two days. The
common theme was that each Lockdown-legitimate
two-person team had to visit a water feature
that is named on the OS map. However it
should not be any of the 16 main lakes of
the Lake District.
Wednesday
25th November
Stan
& Don: Red Screes Tarn and
Scandale Tarn
Our
plan was somewhat ambitious in comparison
to many of our recent efforts. At
the top of Scandale Pass there is a wall
that leads uphill to the left. After
150 yards, a tarn is to be discovered. Scandale
Tarn. Sounds easy? Yes, but
first we had 2,400 feet of Red Screes to
overcome.
We
started from Ambleside, a road slog.
Had
we started from the Kirkstone Pass we could
have saved about 3 miles and 1,400 feet
and I would have had the thrill of a helicopter
ride rescuing me from the hill. Stan
would have been alright though.
The
climb was relentless. I wasn’t going
too well. I had to ask the Great Jehovah
to guide me. It is a long time since
I had needed his help but I sang to him
and, true to his word, he led me with his
powerful hand. Stan was alright though.
Just
before the summit is a tarn that Stan insisted
was called Red Screes Tarn. Should
that be counted or not? On the OS
maps it is shown but not named. So
strictly, no. But it is included,
named, in
John & Anne Nuttall’s “The Tarns of
Lakeland” Vol.2: East. Indeed our
exact walk is described. So maybe?
After
Red Screes had been conquered we dropped
down to the Scandale Pass col then started
the aforementioned short climb to Scandale
Tarn. Definitely Valid.
Evidential
photos were WhatsApped and we had lunch.
A very pleasant place so to do.
The
descent back to Ambleside was long but uneventful
apart from the very intricate sheepfold and
the Tower
of Beauty and Friendship.
Job
done. 8.9 miles, 2,688 feet
Don
Mike
& Terry : High Dam and Boretree
Tarn
(Yew Barrow/Rusland Heights)
Water
being the theme, High Dam was my first choice. There were a
few people around including two young ladies (too far away, Tony) who were
changing to go wild swimming. Their screams travelled across the water as they
got in.
From
High Dam, up and onwards to Yew Barrow, Rusland Heights and Boretree Tarn.
From there down to Rusland Pool and flat along the Crams, lunch by the
water, to Haverthwaite. The old iron works are worth seeing from the North
side. Best in the UK apparently. We had an argument with some brambles.
Otherwise, a great walk on a beautiful November day.

Robin
(plus Holly) : Scaleber Waterfall
Early
start in mist and away up to the high moors.....
.....
along Springfield grass track where the
sheep rounded up Holly.....
.....to
Scaleber Waterfall, today’s destination.
The road sign says Falls, the OS map says
Force and the National Trust board at Scaleber
Wood says Foss - evidence of our mongrel
ancestry, but only a short walk, so it’s
off to Otterburn by way of Langber Track
passing below the Harestones (after which
our house is named), over swampy, remote
Newton and Hellifield Moors to the quaint
hamlet of Otterburn.
Then
back home after lunch on Wenningber Hill
overlooking farmland appropriately named
for today- Goal!

Bryan
& Liz: Cunswick Tarn
What tarn could we do that didn't involved
driving anywhere? Cunswick Tarn was the obvious choice so Liz and I waited for
the sun to come out and set off.
No matter how many times I go over the
Scars I always enjoy it. Finished with an unmapped and unnamed lake* on The
Heights.
Only a short outing;
6 miles / 1,000 feet.
Bryan
* It's
a water hazard on the golf course and is
now shown but unnamed on the 2020 OS 1:25k
map.
Mike
T & Cherrie: Grasmere
After
a rather tardy start to the day we drove to White Moss and walked clockwise
around Grasmere, taking the Coffin Route on the east side. Very still, sunny
and surprisingly few folk.
Mike
T
Oh!
What cheats. Grasmere was on
the non-qualifying list! Still, it
looks nice!
Stephen:
Grange-over-Sands Duck Pond and
Swimming Pool
Stephen
That's
also a cheat, Stephen, as neither the Ornamental
Gardens Duck Pond nor the derelict outdoor
swimming pool are named on the OS map, though
they are shown. Maybe named
on the next edition?
Tony
& Pat: Levens Park
River Kent!
At least we
were out!
Tony
Chris
& Sue: Dubbs Reservoir
