BB2043 :
Over the Rainbow?
Wednesday
2nd December 2020
The
symbol by which 2020 will be remembered
is the Rainbow. Many of us still have
them in our windows or on our dustbins;
reminders of the evenings that we stood
at our gates clapping the NHS staff, carers
and all the other folk at their key work
despite the deadly virus.
Today
was potentially a step forward. Out
of Lockdown and into Tier Two. In
particular, BOOTboys
could return to groups of six. As
it happened, only four of us were able to
take advantage of the relaxation.
The
forecast had improved significantly. Overnight
rain clearing by 9 a.m., an hour earlier
than we had been told last night. We
should be meeting in sunshine which we would
enjoy throughout the day. It didn’t
quite work out like that.
It
was spitting as we arrived, in our individual
cars of course, on the west side of the
River Rothay at Ambleside. Fortunately,
the rain did clear and conditions were good
as we climbed .....
.....
though not quite as dramatic as the photo,
taken into the sun, looking down the length
of Windermere.
Lily
Tarn was looking at its best (if you like
the brown tones of dead bracken, which I
do).
Likewise
Loughrigg Tarn.
Our
objective was the Loughrigg summit which
we reached without problem. It was
quite busy there with people who clearly
had the same idea of the best way to celebrate
the relaxation.
However,
dark clouds were gathering on the horizon.
Bowfell started to disappear. The
Langdales had a nasty belt of rain passing
through and heading in our direction.
It
was time to get off the hill.
Wet
weather clothing was needed as we dropped
drop down to Loughrigg Terrace from whence
we took the sheltered route through the
trees to the Grasmere beach.
It
was there that we saw the rainbow. Or
two of them if you count its reflection.
I was hoping we might see the full
arch but, as it moved up and over, the lake
end vanished. But was it a sign?
The
sun was out again as we crossed over to
the Coffin Route, fortunately not being
used for that purpose, where we had a pleasant
stop for a late-ish lunch.
Reaching
the Bishop’s Palace (Rydal Hall), the cafe
was open but had no customers. For
us, a decision was needed. Should
we head up to Buckstone Jump, as on
BB1806,
or simply continue along the low level path
to Ambleside? The sun was now sinking
behind Loughrigg so we chose the latter.
When
we reached the cars, it started to rain
again. But when I turned on the radio
I heard the news. The Corvid vaccine
has been approved and will be rolled out
very shortly. Hopefully we are now
flying over the rainbow and the dreams that
we dared to dream really will come true.
