BB2107 : Victor
Ludorum
Sunday
14th - Thursday 18th February
2021
The
theme for this week's Lockdown Challenge
was for photographs of animals taken on
the BOOTboy
covidly-solo expeditions this week.
Animals
were to be quadrupeds so no birds or fish.
No humans or personal family pets
allowed. The subject could be a real
animal, a man-made representation of an
animal such as a statue or model or a flat
image of an animal such as on a plaque,
an advertising sign or poster.
Each
would judged against one of three characteristics
and then winners would go forward to considered
for the Best in Show award, the Victor Ludorum.

The
Results
Before
anyone asks, yes the judges were my daughter
and her two children. However they
were presented with the photos without any
identifying features as to the photographer
so they didn't know who had taken which
picture. It was especially pleasing
therefore when I read their judgement to
find that four of the winning entries were
mine!! Maybe I need to rethink what
the prizes should be. They were just
going to be the glory of such recognition
but perhaps.....
Enough
of that. Here are the winners; are
they the ones that you would have chosen?

Comments:
Tony:
I found this challenge rather difficult but as the rules allowed for
artificial animals the Bristly Hog came immediately to mind. I also thought of
rabbits as a colony inhabits the offices next door to Asda and squirrels which
roam freely in Parkside cemetery. The problem with rabbits and squirrels is
that you can't get close to them and unfortunately the magnified phone pics
were rubbish - so the rabbits got culled!! However, I did get up close and
personal with a cute little puppy making a new friend in Asda car park.
I was also lucky to catch a grey enjoying the sunshine and springlike
weather. (I know they're vermin but still cute!!)
The Hog dates back to 1869 and if interested the history of it can be found
here in an interview with the late Kendal historian Percy Duff whom I knew well.

Robin:
With luck the donkeys up Bank
Lane would be at the gate of the hospice, but no, they were huddled in Eeyore
Corner too far away for a shot - and the next days too. So down the lane to see
the friendly rare Wensleydale sheep. Not much about apart from the dogs. The
rules say no pets but surely the judge will allow a BOOTdog? Wednesday we trek
up to the moor and third time lucky as we find the wild Scottish Longhorns
patrolling the Malham road and pastures; they don’t mind posing which is quite
a relief!
|
Don:
It took us three attempts to
find worthwhile entries for the competition- firstly around Natland and
Oxenholme, then up Burneside Road and finally between Burneside and Cowan
Bridge. In the end we found a lot of
models and signs but, unlike others, no animals worthy of snapping apart from
one Siberian Hound that was so nice I forgot to get the camera out. In fact it was surprising just how few
animals of any desription there were to be seen.

Ian
G:
The judges could not be expect
ed to fully understand
"The Hare of the Dog" which was the best submission by far.
Don:
The dog was Robin's and therefore
inadmissible. Only the
hare was eligible for judging.
