BB2108 : Birds and Other Creatures

Sunday 21st - Thursday 25th February 2021

The theme for this week's Lockdown Challenge was for the sort of creatures that were prohibited in last week's BOOTboy covidly-solo expeditions.  This time, animals were not to be quadrupedal so birds, fish or other such creatures were welcome.  Again, no humans or personal family pets allowed.  The subject could be real, man-made (such as a statue or model) or representational (e.g. a flatish image of a creature a plaque or sign).

Each would judged against one of three characteristics and then one picture (not necessarily a rosette winner) would win the Best in Show accolade, the Victor Ludorum.

The Results

Before anyone asks, yes the judges were my son, Jamie, and his two boys, Alexis and Odyssea.  However they were presented with the photos without any identifying features as to the photographer so they didn't know who had taken which picture.  It was especially pleasing therefore when I read their judgement to find that three of the winning entries were mine!!  Maybe I need to rethink what the prizes should be.  They were just going to be the glory of such recognition but perhaps.....

Enough of that.  Here are the winners; are they the ones that you would have chosen?

Comments:

Tony:

The weather and jobs kept me in most of the week but finally managed an hour to panic grab some pics.

The cute little growlers and my fat flying rat speak for themselves but the lowly little wood lice deserve some comment. I've never been into creepy crawlies much but since being a child wood lice have always fascinated me. They remind me of little armadillos but according to Wikipedia they date back 60 million years and are actually related to prawns and crabs. Apparently they also taste like wee! (I really should get out more).

My bonus picture:  Spring's coming!

Don:  Sorry, Tony, but your "cute little growlers" are four legged and therefore ineligible.  Should have snapped them last week!

Robin:

Walking in lashing rain with the dog looking about as pee’d off as I felt, not getting much joy with this week’s photos, for some strange reason Elvis’s Occupation G.I. Blues sprang into my head. Nothing like a blast of Blues to cheer you up, so this week’s report is I hope better than another tale about a walk around town.

To the tune of G.I. Blues with apologies to The King

Lockdown BOOTboy Blues

I've got those up, two, three, four
Occupation Lockdown Blues
From my uncut hair to the heels of my BOOT
boy shoes
And if I don't go walkabout soon
I'm gonna blow my fuse

I’d like to be out hikin’
Before I go insane
I’d like to be out hikin’
Before I go insane
‘Cos you don't get no fun
From walkin’ down the same ol’ lane

I've got those up, two, three, four
Occupation Lockdown Blues
From my hippy hair to the heels of my BOOT
boy shoes
And if I can’t go walkabout soon
I'm gonna blow my fuse

Tony:

Robin's report reminded me of a poem I heard years ago - again when I was young.

As I awoke one morning,
the earth lay quiet and still
when a little robin redbreast
perched upon my sill.

He sang a song so lovely
so carefree and so gay,
that slowly all my troubles
began to slip away.

He sang of far off places
of laughter and of fun,
It seemed his very trilling,
brought up the morning sun.

I stirred beneath the covers
crept slowly out of bed,
and swiftly shut the window down
and crushed his XXXXXX head!

Don:

No poems to report.  Just to record that we walked from the well-closed Strackland Arms over to Levens and back via Sizergh Castle.  Most of our photos were taken in Levens.
