BB2212 : It took 75 years
Thursday
21st April 2022
My apologies in advance. This is going to be a rather self-indulgent
report. But then, why not? It’s not every week one achieves one’s Semisesquicentenary. Now, there’s a grand word for you! Or at least for me. 75 not out, eh? !!!
The target for my celebratory
outing was Troutbeck Tongue. Originally
we were going to go higher but the collective recent layoffs led to lowered
ambitions.
To ensure we were able to park
by the river near the Church at Troutbeck, we set off early only to find we had
been beaten to it by a large group of U3A types. Fortunately we were able to find places a
little further along the road but it just shows how essential are early starts,
much to Tony’s distress.
First stop- the Mortal
Man. The
man on the weather vane pointed to strange sights in the sky- expanding
white lines that I don’t
remember seeing last time we were there.
If you must park early, it doesn’t
mean you have to walk early as long as you can find a suitable place for coffee
and for Tony to tackle his Wordle. The
Mortal Man obliged. John
was frustrated as he had solved the challenge earlier and was aching to give us the
solution. It was Terry who cracked it.
Apart from a cool breeze it was
a lovely morning as we walked up the valley.
The short sharp climb
identified those who had dogs that kept them fit (John and Robin) or had been to
Snowdonia recently (TV Mike). We others
have been more sedentary (my computer thought I was trying to spell “sedimentary”
which didn’t seem quite right). Robin
did have Holly with him. John’s dog is
not yet old enough to tackle hills so wasn’t with us. However we did have another canine friend,
Pedro, that Stan was looking after for his son.
Although the Tongue isn’t very
high, it does provide a good view point down the valley.
That
up the valley is somewhat bleaker.
Given that the
wind was in the east, it was a good place to stop for a Tony-time lunch just
below the top though I don't think he appreciated Holly jumping on his belly
as he was trying to catch a
nap!
It was also a good place
to display my new T-shirt with its apt slogan:
IT
TOOK 75 YEARS TO LOOK THIS
GOOD!
The return down the valley to
the cars was pleasant but uneventful.

More importantly, it left us sufficient time to travel on to the Brewery
at Staveley where we were able to celebrate with a feast of best bitter and
pork pies. Well worth waiting 75 years
for!
