: You Better Stop, Look Around!
Wednesday

December 2022
I
know how several readers like
to have music woven into these
reports so here it comes.....
...... here it comes.....
..... ..... here
comes the .... ..... .....
19th Nervous Breakdown.
Why?
I
know you are not the kind of
person you meet at certain dismal,
dull affairs and I doubt (though
possible) that any relative
of yours owes a million dollars
tax or is inventing ways of
making sealing wax.

No,
it was the singular fact that this was our
19th visit to Wansfell Pike. No breakdown
of any sort, nervous or otherwise. Yes,
very tenuous I agree.
The
odd thing is that, despite all these outings
to a relatively small hill, I don't think
we have ever repeated the same route, although
we have done some in reverse.
One
of Tony's redeeming features (there are
others) is that he is a Bloodbiker. As
he was on call last night, he requested
a relatively late start which had the bonus
of avoiding the extreme cold of the early
morning. Parking down near Troutbeck
Church we made our way up to the village
where a debate took place as to whether
to visit the Mortal Man. I objected.
Not because it would be eating into
what was now going to be a relatively short
day, but due to the fact that they had totally
ignored the message I had left for them
on their phone to ask if we could park there
on the understanding that we would return
for celebrations. No reply, no custom.
The
track up from the village is initially surprisingly
steep. We had a good view of the Ill Bell
range.....
.....
and some wild ponies over towards Baystones.
Can you spot them?
Once
you get onto the fell, it eases off somewhat
then steepens, inevitably, towards the summit.
Some were anxious to get out of the
bitterly cold wind and drop down to a sheltered
place to have their lunch. However
Philip stood on the summit rocks and started
doing a rather strange, sinewy dance.
"Come
on," John and I cried, "it's too
cold to linger, lunch is calling".
He
carried on dancing then swung his arm around,
pointing, whilst singing loudly "You
better stop, look around." Suddenly
we understood what he was Jaggering on about.
It is a magnificent viewpoint, across
to the Coniston and Langdale fells.
The
view south to the estuary was somewhat tamed
by being directly into the sun.
The
descent (19th Wansfell walkdown?) was via
the intriguingly named Hundreds Road track
(I really must find out why it is so called)
to the Victorian viewing point pillar.....
|
.....
then back down to Troutbeck
where the Old Vicarage had a
magnificent frozen waterfall
dropping from a bedroom window
and down the full front of the
house. A frozen Rapunzel,
perhaps? I can still hear
Arthur Mullard! Sadly
I can't trace a recording.
And
that's it. Back to the
other recording.
.....
It's all over now.
.....
..... Oops, sorry.
.....
..... ..... Right group, wrong
song.
Don,
Wednesday 14th December 2022 Thanks
to Tony for several of the pictures
