: Tony and the Voodoo Doll
Wednesday
10th May 2023
The
weather had been forecast wet in the a.m.,
so a late start was decided on. Some had
time constraints, so we couldn’t go far.
We met at Leighton Moss at 11 am. News had
arrived that we were to be leaderless. Don
was busy building his new citadel. We found
an untried route on the phone and followed
that. Dodging across Silverdale Golf Course,
we watched for balls coming hither and thither.
It pays to let golfers have priority. Most
amateur golfers are not that accurate.
Having
diced with death, we came across some magnificent
wall building.
Turned
out we had done bits of the route before
but not all. It was a bit damp to begin
with but thankfully it dried up and was
a great day for walking in the end. We thought
it might have been muddy after all the rain,
but it drains well here. It’s less than
two miles to the Pepperpot.
It
was after 12 so there was the usual banter
about lunch, but we decided to get more
distance under our belts instead of food.
We passed a fascinating lorry with drilling
machinery. They were about to install a
ground source heat pump for one of the large
houses. Talking of houses, despite frequent
visits to the area, it seemed like new buildings
and extensions were springing up all over
the place.
Climbing
up from the Cove East to Silverdale we came
across a National Trust exercise in protecting
Green-winged & Early Purple orchids.
“They don't survive any kind of trampling”.
So
the Trust have corralled volunteers to do
the annual count. And the good news is there
are more this year.
Between
Silverdale and the Wolf House Gallery, we passed a
house where we noticed several figurines in the window. We wondered why.
Is it a witch's house?
Are they Voodoo dolls?
Was that the reason
for the sudden shriek of pain from Tony?
Had someone stuck a pin in his
effigy's hamstring to cause his affliction?
Tony
was suffering. We directed him on
a route straight back to the car park and
offered to get a car to pick him up if needed.
No-one offered to carry him….!
Tony-less,
we carried on down to Jenny Brown’s Point,
then back up the hill and across beautiful
ground/woods/water.
Someone
said “God’s own country”. And he’s right,
as confirmed at the Hare & Hounds, fortunately
with the rediscovered Tony.
