BB2315 : Tony and the Voodoo Doll

Wednesday 10th May 2023

The weather had been forecast wet in the a.m., so a late start was decided on. Some had time constraints, so we couldn’t go far. We met at Leighton Moss at 11 am. News had arrived that we were to be leaderless. Don was busy building his new citadel. We found an untried route on the phone and followed that. Dodging across Silverdale Golf Course, we watched for balls coming hither and thither. It pays to let golfers have priority. Most amateur golfers are not that accurate.

Having diced with death, we came across some magnificent wall building.

Turned out we had done bits of the route before but not all. It was a bit damp to begin with but thankfully it dried up and was a great day for walking in the end. We thought it might have been muddy after all the rain, but it drains well here. It’s less than two miles to the Pepperpot.

It was after 12 so there was the usual banter about lunch, but we decided to get more distance under our belts instead of food. We passed a fascinating lorry with drilling machinery. They were about to install a ground source heat pump for one of the large houses. Talking of houses, despite frequent visits to the area, it seemed like new buildings and extensions were springing up all over the place.

Climbing up from the Cove East to Silverdale we came across a National Trust exercise in protecting Green-winged & Early Purple orchids. “They don't survive any kind of trampling”.

So the Trust have corralled volunteers to do the annual count. And the good news is there are more this year.

Between Silverdale and the Wolf House Gallery, we passed a house where we noticed several figurines in the window. We wondered why.

Is it a witch's house?

Are they Voodoo dolls?

Was that the reason for the sudden shriek of pain from Tony?

Had someone stuck a pin in his effigy's hamstring to cause his affliction?

Tony was suffering.  We directed him on a route straight back to the car park and offered to get a car to pick him up if needed.  No-one offered to carry him….!

Tony-less, we carried on down to Jenny Brown’s Point, then back up the hill and across beautiful ground/woods/water.

Someone said “God’s own country”. And he’s right, as confirmed at the Hare & Hounds, fortunately with the rediscovered Tony.

Tony's Tale Of Woe

We were walking casually along flat pavement under absolutely no load when I felt a sudden twang in my left leg - I'm sure I heard it! At first I thought it was a hamstring but hey - what do I know! Anyway it hurt like ***** and brought me to an abrupt halt. Fortunately I had my sticks with me so they kept me hobbling mobile. The boys were great and offered to curtail the rest of the walk and get me back to the car. I thought that at the rate I was able to move, they would soon have got bored and left me on the side of the road so I told them to carry on and I'd take a 'short cut' back to the car parked at Leighton Moss RSPB and I'd wait for them there.

When this happened, our location was at a T junction on the road behind Jenny's Point and Mike provided me some directional instruction 'go up there for a bit then turn right'. We parted company and I started off up the hill. Those of you who know me know I'm not good with directions - basically I'm too lazy to pay attention. Anyway, I eventually reached the top of the road where the Gods decided to have some fun with me as I turned left.

After quite some time in excruciating pain (but I don't complain) I started to see signs of civilisation which developed into full blown street development. At this point I sensed something was amiss and then I spotted a young lady exiting her front door. I asked her how far it was to the RSPB and she said it’s quite a long way from here and pointed back the way I'd come. I then realised I was in Silverdale!! She could see I was having difficulty walking and kindly offered to take me there but like an idiot I politely refused saying the walk would help my injury.

I had to fully retrace every ****** step adding, at my estimate, well over a mile back on top of the mile I'd walked into the village. I eventually got back to where I should have turned right and continued wending my extremely weary way to the car.

After a while my phone rang - it was Mike who offered to come and get me in the car. I was saved!! They had actually completed the walk and got there before me after all. By now I wasn't that far away so said I'd continue.

The Gods were still having fun as I must have lost my presence of mind and hobbled straight past the road end leading to the car park, finally reaching the railway station where I realised the error of my ways. Sighing wistfully, I retraced my steps then I spotted Stan who'd come looking for me. I was quite touched at their concern but then I remembered I had the keys to the car!!

Stats to be determined, but I swore I'd walked farther than they did. On the plus side, whilst battling the intense pain, I came across a house selling jars of honey from the front porch which had to be bought making it all worthwhile!!
