BB2402: Writer's Block

Thursday 18th January 2024

She walks down the stairs

wearing the tight black dress

that covers every inch of her body.

She walks into my room.

“Don" she says “What are you watching?”  “I’ve got Writer’s Block” I complained.  I had asked Uncle Google and the first advice he came up with was “Go for a hike”.  Very helpful when that is what I am trying to write about!

Then I found Brandon Polanco’s remedy.  I explained “It’s a video about someone who has the same problem after his opening line about her walking down the stairs wearing that tight black dress that covered every inch of her body.”

It didn’t help.  All I could think of was a boring “We did this then we did that” sort of report.  “Just tell them that,” she said.  “No-one will notice the difference.”

Sound advice.  Here it is:

Four of us met at the Derby Arms.

TV Mike, Terry and I got into Tony’s car.

He drove us to Martin’s house.

Martin had cooked some tasty sausages for us.

We set off across a field where the farmer had recently been muck spreading.

We climbed up onto The Township Allotment.

It was a cold but beautiful sunny day and the wind wasn’t as bad as expected.

There were some docile cows grazing.

The windswept trees looked dramatic.

In the far distance we could see Ingleborough.

We continued as far as the Lord’s Seat cairn.

Are you still awake?  Me too.  Just!

Still struggling, I asked Uncle Google for more advice.  I found that Just Jack had had the same problem.

I get this writer's block, it comes as quite a shock
And now I'm stuck between a hard place and the biggest rock
In my own head consumed, I sit back in my room.

Novel, but that didn’t help either.

It was noon so we stopped for lunch to keep Tony happy.

The Howgills were covered with snow.

I phoned Stephen to delay our meeting time.

He didn’t answer.  There was no signal.

From the end of Whitbarrow Scar we could see Blackpool Tower.

We took the steep descent through the woods.

Stephen had been patiently waiting for us at Bellart How by the telephone box that was no longer there.

We struggled though a field that had turned into a swamp.

Two men were laughing at us.  No wonder they call it Swimmers Farm!

We finished at the Derby Arms where we met Mike B.

We had a pleasant couple of drinks then we went home.

So that’s it.  Sorry it’s so dull but if she is right, that won’t have mattered.  I’ll try harder next week.

Comments :

Terry: Not boring! Not going out is boring……….

Don:  I'm not a fan of that television programme either!

Mary P : You couldn’t be boring! Not when you’re bringing back memories of great walks, wonderful days on the hills either with friends or on my own, and such wonderful photography. You’ll have to try much harder if you want to be boring! (And all the best writers get writer’s block, I’m told.)

Don: Thanks, Mary.  I'll do my best!
