: In Search of the Crusty Buggler
Thursday
1st February 2024
Some
very good friends recently gave me a local
map. It’s called “Seldom Seen” and
features places or things that are, surprise,
surprise, seldom seen. One such item
caught my eye. The Crusty Buggler.
It is to be found on Hutton Roof Crags.
Of
course, we had to search for
him (or it).
But
who (or what) is the Crusty
Buggler?
For
once, Uncle Google didn’t know.
He thought I was talking
about the Krusty Burglar. He
told me that:
"The
Krusty
Burglar
or rather, his actor, was majorly
injured by Homer (while acting
as Krusty the Clown) when he
believed him to actually be
stealing the burgers during
a promotion of the new Krusty
Burger (the one with Ketchup),
thus resulting in the kids (and
the announcer) being left mortified.”
I
hope that makes sense to you
as it didn’t to me! You
might enjoy the video though!
There again, you might
not. Click on the picture

Anyway,
Stan and I met Martin and Terry at the Auction
Mart then started walking from the hamlet,
Farleton.
Being
rather older than we once were, we didn’t
take the direct route up the scree but the
more sensible route to the top of Farleton
Knott.
It's
a great viewpoint though it wasn't as clear
as we had hoped. No Blackpool Tower!
At
the summit, we met some locals out for a
stroll.
"Where
can we find the Crusty Buggler?" I
asked.
"Ah,"
said their leader, an old man
with a bald head and grizzly
beard, "Buggler is an old
alien who is bald with a grizzly
beard."
I
began to wonder if we had found
him (or it) but he continued,
“He is blue and has a monocle
in his left eye. He wears blue
overalls with white clothing
underneath, black shoulder pads,
a red cloak with purple in front,
a black belt, blue gloves, and
blue shoes."

|
"Thank
you," I said. "But is that
Crusty?" He took the monocle
out of his left eye, saying “Oh, I don’t
know about that.” I thought not. Not
on Hutton Roof.
We
crossed over Newbiggin Crags with its partial
limestone pavement.....
.....
to enter Uberash Plain and followed the
path through the woods that leads to Hutton
Roof Crags where the Crusty Buggler is said
to live. There was no sign of him
(or it).
The
trigpoint is another open area with good
views though still not clear.
There
was a cold wind blowing so we returned to
the woods. A clearing in the sun provided
the opportunity to stop for lunch and ponder
how to continue our search.
Days
are still short and, as we had been diverted
by coffee and cake at the Auction Mart café,
we were potentially running out of time
for a detailed Buggler hunt. We decided
to return to the cars along the north side
of the woods. Maybe that was where
he (or it) lurked?
We
met a lady walking her dog and asked if
she could help.
"Of
course," she said. "There’s
a song about him. It’s
by a group called Karyo. Have
you not heard it?"
We
hadn’t.
We
listened on my phone. It
was another near miss.
Burglar,
not Buggler.
Why
not click on The
Crusty Burglar!
You
might enjoy listening to it.
There
again….....!

We
gave up. We left Hutton Roof Crags
and returned to Farleton Knott, taking the
low path that skirts round the side, then
drove to the Hare & Hounds, there to
meet Stephen and Mike. We told them
about our fruitless search.
“Well,”
said Mike. “I’m not surprised”.
"Why?"
we asked. Stephen laughed.
“Take
another look at the map” said Mike. "What
does it say about the Crusty Buggler?"
Did
I feel daft? There in black and white
was the explanation. “The Crusty Buggler
is part human and part fish and lives under
a rock near the crag.” Clearly, we’ll
have to go back. We hadn’t looked
underneath any rocks.
