: Ways We haven't Been Before
Thursday
17th October 2024
“Wansfell” agreed Martin when I suggested it as a destination. Fine, but the challenge was to find a new way there and back. After all, this would be our 19th visit and I don’t think we have ever repeated a route. Then we had inspiration. The National Park’s Brockhole website had advertised Free Parking for Locals during the winter months. Let’s take advantage of the offer, have a snack in their restaurant then set off. Sounds like a good idea? Wrong. Free parking doesn’t start until November, we were told. But, we pointed out, your website says it is free now. “Sorry”, was the reply. “You can’t believe everything on our website”. So, rather than stump up £16 we sought a Plan B. Troutbeck; the layby. Not ideal as it would be more challenging to find a new route, but at least it would be free and had a good view of the Ill Bell range.
That
wasn't this week. It's what I wrote
exactly a year ago on BB2329.
We tried again today. Still
no free parking for locals so what did we
do? Last time's Plan B was no good.
We needed yet another new route for
this, our 20th visit. So we stumped up
for the car park. Price rise to £8.50
this year but just one car, Stan driving
Martin and me.
It
was worth it. It succeeded in providing
us with a new route up and down. The
only problem was that the promised sunshine
didn't appear so for the first time that
I remember on Wansfell, we were actually
heading into cloud.
The
walk started pleasantly enough. We
had a pleasant climb up an old, autumnal
bridle path, a way up to Robin Lane that
we haven't been before. The views
over Windermere were understandably hazy.
We
could see that the Wansfell top was shrouded.
We
looked over to Thornthwaite Beacon. TV
Mike had told us he was going there today
with his other group. We had said
we would wave to them. Not possible
today- even more shrouded.
Not
surprisingly, we couldn't see much at the
top. Also it was cold and raining
so we abandoned all thought of visiting
Baystones, descending instead to High Skeghyll.
From
there we dropped down to Brockhole on paths
we hadn't been before.
We
ended up somewhere we have been before and
hopefully will do again many times. The
Hare & Hounds at Bowland Bridge. Cheers!
